Beginner’s Guide to Bathroom Cabinets
Years ago when someone described a bathroom cabinet, or a medicine cabinet, it usually meant the same thing. They were made for holding your small bathroom and medicinal items and not a whole lot else.
Almost every bathroom had some type of small wall mounted metal shelving unit fastened on the wall. It was generally mounted right over the bathroom sink, had a white enamel finish and a mirror on the front. These cabinets were strictly utilitarian and there was no thought given to making the product appealing in any aesthetic sense.
We’ve Come A Long Way Since Then
We use our bathroom cabinets a little differently than we used to and with this change has come a whole new world in terms of bathroom cabinet design, with a lot of different colors, styles and materials now available to consumers which are functional as well as stylish.
The days of “any color you want, as long as it’s white” are gone and there are now bathroom cabinets made from plastic, chrome, polished nickel, bamboo, or wicker to add interest and flair to any bath. There are also many different styles to choose from which can make this once strictly functional element into something which can add a lot of aesthetic appeal to your bathroom.
Understanding Vanity Bathroom Cabinets
When you look for a bathroom cabinet today, you can find a variety of great styles from which to choose. Usually this term refers to what is now known as a bathroom vanity. This cabinet houses the bathroom sink and faucets. There is of course a vanity counter top, which you can find in many different materials; marble and tile are especially popular choices. The cabinet also has room for under sink storage, with 2 or more doors placed on the front to provide access to the storage area. Many models of vanity bathroom cabinets will also feature drawers for storing small items.Your vanity cabinet also is a much needed storage space in your bathroom and will typically have two doors for access to this under sink storage. Vanity bathroom cabinets also commonly include drawers which lend themselves well to storing small items.
Generally, people choose to match their vanity cabinet with their vanity cabinet fixture placed above the sink. These can be wide and tall but are fairly shallow, and they hang flush against the wall. In addition to mirrored doors, these fixtures usually have interior shelving and mirrored doors.
Matching Your Existing Bathroom Decor
Consumers have a lot of choices in bathroom cabinets. They come in any size which is practical for use and some are even large enough for towel and linen storage. Since bathrooms tend to be one of the smallest rooms in the home, storage space can be difficult to find and is always appreciated. Finding storage solutions which maximize the available space while adding to the decor are something every homeowner dreams of.
American and European Style Bathroom Cabinets
Generally speaking, bathroom cabinets may be either American style or European style.
American-style cabinets typically use face-framing, meaning that the doors or other covering surface is needed to give the cabinet the appearance of being closed. With a European style bath cabinet, the shelving is open and there are only minimal bits of trim noted along the shelving framework.
Bathroom Cabinet Selections
When shopping for bathroom cabinets there are stock, custom, and modular units to consider. Stock items are those cabinets which have been manufactured on a large scale for the mass market. These tend to be the least expensive, but you will be limited by a much smaller choice of styles and sizes.
Modular cabinets are available in a much larger range of sizes and styles and are designed to easily integrate with other, usually matching pieces. These are made to be added on to easily with coordinating, sometimes interlocking pieces. If you’re looking for a one of a kind bathroom cabinet though, you’ll have to have it custom made.
Custom bathroom cabinets are made to order and can be made in any size, color, style and in any material you specify.
