Choosing The Right Kitchen Island Designs
Be sure to look at multiple kitchen island designs if you think a kitchen island would fit in well with your current setup. If you have decided that a kitchen island is a good idea (and it usually is, if you want more work space and/or eating space), here are some things to consider so that you choose the right one for your needs and decor:
1. What is the island going to be used for?
When you’re picking an island design for your kitchen, make sure you determine what it’s going to be used for before you do. Are you going to use it mostly to eat on? Prepare food? Sit and talk? Are you going to put a microwave or other appliance on it? There’s no particular “right” answer to this question, except that you should pick the island that is going to best fit your needs.
2. You can add food preparation surfaces underneath the island.
Depending on your preference, you may or may not want to make food preparation visible to others. If you’d like to keep this hidden, you can add levels of food preparation areas just underneath the main surface. That way, you can slice, mix, or do other activities without having this be visible to others.
3. Do you have enough cabinet clearance?
Make sure there’s enough room between your kitchen cabinets and the island. Specifically, three to four feet is usually advisable. When in doubt, add more, so that you’ll make sure those around the kitchen island table will always be comfortable. Before you put in your island, measure, measure, and the measure again to make sure there’s enough clearance. This’ll help prevent accidents or mistakes because things are too close to the island for “comfort.”
4. Choose a surface based on your needs.
Depending on what you use the island for, you will need to pick the right surface.
5. Look at the big picture.
When you pick out a design for the kitchen island, take a look at the rest of your kitchen decor. Depending on what you want, you can match the island to your kitchen decor, or you can contrast it with it, as long as it goes with your overall theme. For example, you could make your island match your kitchen cabinets exactly, or you can contrast them and match them to the kitchen table chairs in your kitchen instead. This is one of the more popular trends in modern kitchens, in fact, to match the kitchen island to the furniture instead of to the cabinets.
6. Choose post legs or cabinet style.
Either design can work for your kitchen island, but you should pick the one that best works for you. For example, if you mostly use your kitchen island for food prep, the cabinet setup is a good idea. If you mostly use your kitchen island to sit around and talk with other people, post legs are usually a better bet.
Choosing the right kitchen island can make your kitchen look even better than it does now. A kitchen island can add extra seating to your kitchen and give you extra space, and/or can also give you extra prep area if that’s what you want. Whether you need more cooking or eating space, or just a little “extra” all-purpose space, a good kitchen island can take care of your needs.
