In almost any given community, is the corner cafe the spot that people normally gravitate to, a kind of sociable Mecca that people often visit? Prior to the advent of social media and the proliferation of the hand-held personal computer, also referred to as the smart phone, were we a lot more sociable? Could the Facebook concept of old be the corner cafe and would we be a little more happy to sit and chit chat in these outside cafe chairs, as opposed to posting on a person’s wall?

The good news is that there doesn’t appear to be any trail off in business at the regular corner cafe, even in our interconnected community. Despite the fact that it’s very simple for us to inform everybody what we are going to do in 140 characters or less, we nonetheless value the face-to-face connection, the handshake and smile. Obviously we have transformed meal-time into significant social occasions and we aren’t likely to board ourselves up in the computer room soon, to savour that cup of tea whilst being wary never to spill it on the keyboard. We would much rather shoot the breeze and pass the time of day, whilst enjoying a snack or refreshment with our friends and colleagues.

Politicians understand how important the average corner cafe can be. Each time a significant election is taking place we see photo opportunity after photo opportunity, focusing on these establishments. We frequently see the identified politician interacting with clients, to try to get a true feel for the pulse of the particular area. They acknowledge how crucial these kinds of cafes are, in terms of pure social connection.

Obviously these are not the only real social focal points within the average community. Although we may rely on cafe chairs to provide us with our informal pulpit, most of us would rather spend our Sundays sitting on church chairs and hearing community leaders, as we find yet another way to celebrate life along with a greater understanding of community values. We’re not about to forget about how to socialise.
