So You Have Wooden Furniture and Need to Know What Essential Protection is Required?
With pretty natural patterning and numerous shades of colors, wooden furniture is like bringing a tiny bit of nature into your home. Moreover, quality wooden furniture can survive for generations with an almost unchanged appearance. But there is a price to fork out and that is general care and consideration.
Attention on a daily basis
There are few rules, which can be used for all types of wooden furniture. Let’s start by making it completely clear that wood and humidity do NOT like each other. When removing dirt or dust from the surfaces, do not use any kind of wet cloth, only ever use something that is soft to clean it. Keep the furniture dry and remove up any drips or wet areas. Locate furniture in a room with a consistent temperature, thus staying away from temperature and humidity extremes. If you have movable heaters or stoves in your room, keep your furniture away from them.
Push furniture away from sunshine as it can spoil the wood. Sunlight fades wood and can be the cause of color fading. Permanent damage can be caused over a space of time. Avoid resting hot objects on wood, such as coffee cups, candles and other such objects as this can damage the wood straightaway. Having wooden furniture in a room means keeping a set of mats at hand (ideally made of cork, because plastic or rubber mats can soften and damage the finish). The mats are not only to put under your cup of coffee, but also under a vase or other hard objects which may damage the surface.
Lets explore the different types of veneers
Different types of wood need definitive care for that reason we need to find out what type of surface your furniture has. Soft (oiled), painted and hard wood, which incorporates varnish and shellac, are the three general kinds of wood finishes. Whilst painted finishing can be comfortably recognized, the others are not so easy.
Once you have discounted a painted coating then, in a hidden spot, rub a little linseed into the surface. Linseed will be soaked up if the surface is oiled. Acetone should be tried next if the linseed is not soaked up. Polyurethane will see acetone run off like water, lacquer like nail varnish disintegrates straight away. Varnishes and shellacs both appear viscous after minute. Varnish will behave much more slowly if a few drops of alcohol are put over the area, so determining whether the finish is varnish or shellac.
Look out for the later chapter in wood furniture maintenance where we will scrutinize these different types of finishes.
